Instruction
Within the LS Intro program, students receive instruction in four broad subject areas:
All four subjects are taught in English, though clarification may be provided from time to time in the students’ native languages.
1. English
Our English program focuses on the four pillar skills of English learning: listening, reading, speaking and writing. We will strengthen these key skills through small-group workshops, individual study, language games, oral presentations, and online practice, along with weekly word and sound studies, and trips to the library.
Our online learning platforms also allow students to continue their English learning at home:
2. Math
Our students learn math, in English, according to the New York State Math Curriculum program EngageNY, the same program being used in ASM’s mainstream classrooms. This program teaches inquiry-based mathematics concepts. This program doesn’t just teach children how to find the answer; it teaches them why.
We will augment our math instruction with weekly math games and online work. Our online program allows students to practice math skills in English, furthering two major instructional goals.
3. Science
The Intro science program is based on thematic units that appeal across grade levels. We use an inquiry-based approach, conducting experiments and live lessons where possible. Through this approach, students can work to their interest and ability level. Much of our life science study will take place in our green laboratory, the Intro Garden. We will do several projects over the year, and augment our study with themed field trips. We also run an eco-classroom, reducing consumption and waste, and recycling, wherever possible.
4. Social Studies
While not a major part of our Intro curriculum, we will devote time each cycle to the social sciences. We accomplish our social awareness goals through recycling and concept art, honoring our international classroom, celebrating United Nations international days, and discussing various thematic issues of cultural and social importance.
Assessment
LS Intro assessments begin immediately and continue throughout the year. Students are regularly assessed in English, math and science through observation and testing. Our students’ progress will be discussed with Ms. Aura Beatty, Learning Support Coordinator and Ms. Aisha Qureshi, Lower School Principal. Through regular conferencing, we will determine student needs and find how best to support them as they move towards integration.
