STAR HOMEWORK
The Intro Class will follow the Star Homework model, which gives students control over the type and amount of homework they do each night. Homework will be meaningful, purposeful, and will help students practice and master new skills in the acquisition of English fluency. Students will receive a Star Homework Bookmark each week with three daily homework options, or stars. They may choose to do from one to three stars. If students choose to do only one star, they MUST read.
Reading
Students may read from their home book collections, from the library collection, from their online RAZ KIDS accounts, etc. Ten minutes of reading (not counting Reading Log time) counts for one star.
Math
Students must complete their Engage NY homework, or, may practice their English and Math skills at the same time by logging in to their IXL.com accounts. Twenty questions count for one star.
Comprehension
Students may use their online ReadTheory accounts to practice comprehension and critical thinking. They should complete at least one reading passage and answer the corresponding questions for one star.
Spelling Practice
On spelling test weeks, students may study their spelling words on Wednesday night ahead of Thursday's test to earn one star.
Book Reports
Students may wish to tell the class about a book they enjoyed reading. They can use the Book Report template and present their book to the class for one star.
Prep Choice Presentation
Students may give some thought and preparation time to a free-choice presentation topic for Monday morning. They should spend 10-15 minutes researching relevant vocabulary and giving some thought to the structure of their 5-7 minute presentation.
